To My Future Guest…and Your Welcome

January 5, 2016 by Michelle Filed Under: Being a Mom, Decorating/Remodeling, Life 5 Comments

This is probably one of the funniest stories I have of late.  And it’s a real, true life story that happened just two days ago.

You see, we’re at the tail end of this powder room renovation in our downstairs area.  {All because of that dang flood we had last October}  And well, well….I’ll just tell you the story.

So Sunday afternoon Andrew says to me he needs to go under the house to turn the water back on.  The water to the powder room – the sink, the toilet – you know, the main parts.  And he tells me to have my cell phone on so that he can call me when he turns it on so I can tell him if there are any leaks.

Meanwhile, this seems to be taking him forever so I called my mom and she, Eliza Jane and I had a little chat.

Then, when I realized I was supposed to be waiting for Andrew’s call I got off with Grammy and walked towards the powder room.

Once in, I knocked on the floor and asked how things were going down under.

Slight change of plans.  Andrew had forgotten he’d already done some plumbing work in preparation for the day when we actually did get to turn said water back on so he was redoing part of his current plan.

Meanwhile, both children have come into the bathroom and Reynolds is now banging on the floor yelling, “BABE!  BABE! What you doing down there?!”, while I’m telling him that he can’t call his daddy “BABE!”, only I can.  He tells me I am wrong and I laugh IN his face.

Andrew laughs but tells Reynolds it’s inappropriate.  “HUH?!” he says in return.

“Hey babe, I’m going to turn it on now, let me know if it leaks!” or something like that came forth from the floor.

I didn’t have the valve completely turned off, so water gurggeled up.  I yelled!  Andrew yelled back to turn it all the way to the right.

I turned, it shut off.  At least from what I could tell.

At this point, Reynolds has his step ladder and is midway of knocking over Eliza Jane so I holler at him to put down the ladder before he knocks over his sister.

Andrew yells something.

Meanwhile, in the next 10 seconds I get a hair-brained idea to check the new pocket door and it’s lock.

Hmmm…so if I were my guest, I would pop out his little latch…pull the door to, {Eliza Jane hops into the bathroom with me} and then turn this little lock like THIS.

um.

I looked over to the valve at the toilet….water is dripping.

“BABE!!! TURN OFF THE WATER!!! IT’S LEAKING! IT’S LEAKING!!!”

I sound like I’m on the verge of manic.

“AAANNNNDDDRREEEWWWWW!!!!!!! TURN OFF THE WATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Reynolds is also yelling from the other side of the door.

“BABE! BABE! IT’S LEAKING! BABE! BABE!”

I’m dying.

Also, I’m stuck.

“BABE!  THE DOOR IS LOCKED! I CAN’T GET OUT!”

Finally from under the house, Andrew pipes up, “WHAT?!  You’re stuck?”

“YES, TURN THE WATER OFF, IT’S LEAKING!  AND THE LOCK IS JAMMED; ELIZA JANE AND I ARE STUCK IN THE BATHROOM!!!!”

I’m playing with the lock, trying to get it to turn back the way it’s supposed to and it won’t turn.  It keeps re-locking itself without actually unlocking.

I started knocking on the door.  Reynolds knocked back “LET ME OUT!!!” he yelled!

“You’re not IN!!!” I yelled back at him, laughing almost hysterically.  He keeps knocking and yelling to let him out!

Eliza Jane is just playing with the new toilet paper holder I’d purchased so she was fine.

“Momma, I gotta peep.”

“YOU HAVE TO PEE!?!!?!??!!”

“Uh, huh.  I gotta peep.” He says, thru the door.

I laughed even harder.  I’m locked IN the bathroom.  The ONLY bathroom on the 1st floor of our home.  The gate is locked to the upstairs.  If/when I do get out of this beautiful room, I’m going to have a puddle of PEE to clean up!!!!!!!!!

I couldn’t help but laugh.  This was hilarious!

My husband is UNDER our house.  The valve is leaking water thru my new wall/wallpaper, down the new baseboards and over the new tile.  I am locked in a bathroom with a toddler that has no idea of what is happening, while the other one is on the other side yelling to let HIM out, and that he has to peep, when there is no usable toilet anywhere at his access.  Thiscannotbehappening.

I nearly became crazed.

Andrew was no longer answering my yells.  He’s dead.  He hit his head on some floor joist and he’s knocked himself out or he was bitten by a snake and he’s lying dead on the cold ground under our house.

I shimmied my toe under the door and lifted in the most awkward way.  The door became loosened and it opened just as the door to the garage opened and Andrew appeared.

“What the…you got out?!”

Yes.  Yes, I got out.  “Turn off the water, it’s leaking!!!  DID YOU NOT HEAR ME?!”

His eyes nearly bulged.

“How was I supposed to hear THAT when you were screaming about being locked in the bathroom!  I was trying to get out so I could save your life!!!!”

OMG.  There is never, ever, ever, ever a dull moment in our home.

Who wants to come over?

I promise if you do, you won’t get stuck in the bathroom!

That has been fixed {just a little door filing so the latch fits a little better – not so tightly} and the water is no longer leaking.  My wallpaper, base boards and tile are just as beautiful as before this little bit of excitement!

Stay tuned…this weekend I’m hoping to do a full reveal of the new powder room and it is SO PRETTY!!!

Random thought/small confession: I took the kids into Publix on the way home tonight solely so R could get a cookie.  He was a really good boy for me this afternoon and that was his reward.  Has anyone else ever done this? 🙂

Andrew took R last Saturday and said, “I couldn’t just go in for a cookie” so he bought stuff we didn’t need…that I’d bought already that week. :-/ I told him, “Yes, you CAN just go in for a cookie because we spend over $100 in there every WEEK!!!” 😉 bahaha

Happy Saturday people!!🙌🥳 Today is day 6 of Happy Saturday people!!🙌🥳
Today is day 6 of the @hopewriters #writingchallenge. I actually skipped yesterday because I felt very uninspired by all the things around me 🥴😩 and the prompt Fresh didnt conjure up anything exciting.
But. Today is a brand new day and we're off to a great start over here.🌞
Today's prompt is Rhythm...and being a lover of words, I looked it up to read all of the meanings. 📚
Rhythm always makes me think of music and dancing, so today's pic is of my feet.🤩 I'm no professional dancer but I LOVE to dance. We almost always have music playing in our house and twirling is a constant. Eliza Jane takes dance lessons and Reynolds is hoping to jump into a hip hop class at the same studio.🕺 Andrew and I took dance lessons for a little over a year, until the world shut down last year. So dancing is in our veins.
Along with dancing are repeated patterns and such is life. Patterns of waking and sleeping and the chores of the day. Patterns of food and seasons. Patterns of work and rest. Patterns of joy and sadness.
There are rhythms all around if we are conscious enough to see them.
What patterns do you see in your own world?
#hopewriterlife
Day 4 of the @hopewriters #writingchallenge and to Day 4 of the @hopewriters #writingchallenge and today's prompt is simply: Twenty One.
21. A simple enough number. I pondered writing to my 21 year-old self and quickly decided that wouldn't be a fun time to reminisce 🤪, so I scratched that idea.

I debated on sharing 21 ideas for supper but who am I to tackle THAT!? 👩‍🍳
Maybe 21 books that I want to read this year? 📚
What about 21 stores and shops where I like to find our home reno supplies? Nah.

I even considered 21 hopes for this brand new year we've just started but wasn't quite feeling it.

I landed on 21 adjectives to describe what I like about myself. Some of you may think, why on earth? Because it was hard 🥴😬. Because it forced me to really compliment myself when I am my own worst critic and often speak negativity over myself. It took me maybe 2 minutes to do this, and for that I am thankful!🙌

If you were to write 21 adjectives of what you like about yourself could you do it? And how long would it take you? What would you write?😉 Debating? Just do it 😘♥️

Shine: to give out a bright light or a quality of Shine: to give out a bright light or a quality of brightness.
Today is day 3 of the @hopewriters #writingchallenge and the topic is the word Shine.
When I think of shining, its in a way that brings happiness, joy, excitement, expectation even. Like the sun rising in the east - hence my photo from Sunday morning when Andrew and I were in Kiawah. The shining I think of doesn't bring dread or gloom. When the sun shines, especially after a rainy day, we are thrilled ♥️ and even relieved at times, that the gloom is over.

This is what I want of my life, my words and actions...I want to shine in a way, that people are excited to see/hear from me, as they are a bright star or the sun. Not dread my appearing 😩 (or God forbid applaud my leaving).

Lord, shine through me so that it's you they see. Not me, Lord. Not me.

Progress not Perfection. I've heard this over and Progress not Perfection.
I've heard this over and over and I'm finally putting it into practice this year 🙌
Day 2 of the @hopewriters challenge and we're talking about Progress. So of course I've given you a blurry photo of my @cultivatewhatmatters
#powersheetsplanner January tending list.😆 These are all the things I'm working on this month, this week and today...and some of my things are private 😘
I will share I'm making progress in: spending less, eating less sugar, exercising more consistently, spending more time with my family and Jesus.♥️

Progress is good...it's moving forward in (hopefully) the right direction.
How about you...what does progress look like in your life today?
#hopewriterlife
😄 This week I'm participating in the @hopewrite 😄 This week I'm participating in the @hopewriters #writingchallenge.
Today's prompt: New You...hence my "I'm at the hair salon" photo.😄 New You, New do 💇‍♀️
We have a motto in our house right now, and I'm sure you've either heard or said it yourself: New Year, New You.😉
We are saying it in our house for various and interesting reasons...from Emory wiping his own behind (he's 4), to Reynolds tying his shoes (hello, bunny ears) and Eliza Jane brushing her hair and pulling it out of her face (for crying out loud). And @theandrewrlucas wanting to run a ridiculous 650 miles this year...babe, you do you😘😜.
I can't say that I'm wanting a "new" version of myself this year. Or even that I'm wanting to start anything new, but I definitely want a better version of what I see, think, feel and hear. For me, I recognize it all starts with my time in the Word so this year's got a goal of rising early EVERY day to tune my heart and mind more into Him.♥️ Even on the days I want to sleep in, #firstthingsfirst.
How about you? New you or a better version?
#hopewriterlife
