So I Had to Get a Root Canal….

August 24, 2017 by Michelle Filed Under: Life 3 Comments

About that…I’m shaking my head as I type this to y’all. I can’t even believe it. I had to get a root canal. I didn’t even have a cavity.

For a month or so I’d had a pretty powerful pain {at times} in one of my teeth, and it just got to the point where I was like, “what the hey.” So I scheduled an appointment with my dentist.

The day before my appointment, the receptionist called me and started asking questions about symptoms and such. As I was explaining it all to her, she says to me, “I reeeaaallly think we’re going to need a little longer than what’s on the calendar….”

I basically said okay and thought, ‘okay…that’s interesting’.

The next day. The MORNING of my appointment she calls me back and asks how my calendar looks. She said something like, “I think this could take longer than an hour so I want to be sure you’ve got time available…”

Hello.

I started getting nervous. This lady knows something I don’t know and surely it’s not going to go well for me….

I got to my appointment and another receptionist was at the desk so I told her how my stomach had been in knots all day since I’d had that morning call. She replied, “oh, I’m sure it’s nothing, don’t be worried.”

YOU may think it’s nothing, but someone else thinks it IS!

blah.

I got in the chair, and don’t worry – I’m not going to share all the deets because I know that is weird..and gross…

But I got in the chair, they took x-rays and did interesting things, to see about my pain and the level at which I might punch someone in the face. And ah-ha! He found it. As my mouth was literally throbbing in pain, he says to me, “Yeaaah, I think we’re going to need to do a root canal….”

I didn’t really hear anything other than that because I guess I sort of knew he would say that…as much as I was in denial.

And honestly, I didn’t even know what a root canal was…until I asked him.

Basically they remove the root. Through your tooth. So yeah.

I barely had time to process before he started…which meant I had to get him to stop. My heart was beating out of my chest and I was completely filled with anxiety as I laid there in that chair with the light in my eyes and my fancy sunglasses on.

He asked if I was okay and told me “You’re in the driver’s seat. You tell me when you’re ready.”

I prayed. I told myself I was okay. I gave him a thumbs up and started singing praise songs in my head.

I didn’t feel anything and honestly it really wasn’t bad at all. It’s just the sounds that make me freak out {and maybe you too??}.

So he did part of it last week and I had the rest of it completed yesterday afternoon. Two weeks in a row of drilling and numb-face. That was fun.  Now I have to go back to get a crown or a cap or whatever it’s called so that my tooth doesn’t break or crumble into a million pieces…

{sad face}

Y’all, I’m sort of emotional about all of this. My smile, my teeth have always been just a ‘thing’ for me. I’ve had braces twice. I still wear my retainer from the second time around {learned THAT lesson}. I care for my teeth so I’m just sort of sad I’ve had to go thru this, but I guess it’s just something that happens…?

Anyway. I no longer have any pain, which is great! I took one Tylenol yesterday afternoon as the numbness was wearing off and I haven’t had any other issues, for which I am extremely thankful!

Anyone else out there had a root canal? What was your experience {maybe without all the details?}? 🙂

Girl, I can write a book. I have had five!!! Yep and they were a result of
Old repairs and needing a root canal when they have to do crown or replace one. I am the worst patient ever! But I had an excellent endo doctor .most dentist don’t do them. I have to say, I have never heard of one being diagnosed over the phone. Also never heard of it taking so long to do? Usually it’s all done in one trip except for the crown.they usually put a temp on until the crown is made.
Oh well, glad you have no pain.
I know how you feel. I have to admit , I like my endo doctor . He never once hurt me. I never felt anything.
Just seems extreme that you needed a root canal and didn’t have a filling or cavity. Never heard of this. My Mom worked for dentist so I know a thing or two about it.
I am glad you didn’t have an abcess
You still have a beautiful smile to go with that beautiful heart .❤️

Afraid I’ve had several root canals, and, like you, I feel like I take good care of my teeth. At this point, the cost is the worst of it! You’re definitely over the pain part. The rest, as Mama would say, is a “piece of cake.”

Yep, me too! The endodontist said I had great teeth and I am thinking, “then why the back do I need 2 root canals!?” Apparently it is really common after giving birth to multiple children. Our bodies become depleted of the calcium in our teeth which is sent to the baby; making our teeth weaker. I go for my second one soon. Which will take two different sittings like yours. 😔

Day 4 of the @hopewriters #writingchallenge and to Day 4 of the @hopewriters #writingchallenge and today's prompt is simply: Twenty One.
21. A simple enough number. I pondered writing to my 21 year-old self and quickly decided that wouldn't be a fun time to reminisce 🤪, so I scratched that idea.

I debated on sharing 21 ideas for supper but who am I to tackle THAT!? 👩‍🍳
Maybe 21 books that I want to read this year? 📚
What about 21 stores and shops where I like to find our home reno supplies? Nah.

I even considered 21 hopes for this brand new year we've just started but wasn't quite feeling it.

I landed on 21 adjectives to describe what I like about myself. Some of you may think, why on earth? Because it was hard 🥴😬. Because it forced me to really compliment myself when I am my own worst critic and often speak negativity over myself. It took me maybe 2 minutes to do this, and for that I am thankful!🙌

If you were to write 21 adjectives of what you like about yourself could you do it? And how long would it take you? What would you write?😉 Debating? Just do it 😘♥️

Shine: to give out a bright light or a quality of Shine: to give out a bright light or a quality of brightness.
Today is day 3 of the @hopewriters #writingchallenge and the topic is the word Shine.
When I think of shining, its in a way that brings happiness, joy, excitement, expectation even. Like the sun rising in the east - hence my photo from Sunday morning when Andrew and I were in Kiawah. The shining I think of doesn't bring dread or gloom. When the sun shines, especially after a rainy day, we are thrilled ♥️ and even relieved at times, that the gloom is over.

This is what I want of my life, my words and actions...I want to shine in a way, that people are excited to see/hear from me, as they are a bright star or the sun. Not dread my appearing 😩 (or God forbid applaud my leaving).

Lord, shine through me so that it's you they see. Not me, Lord. Not me.

Day 2 of the @hopewriters challenge and we're talking about Progress. So of course I've given you a blurry photo of my @cultivatewhatmatters
#powersheetsplanner January tending list.😆 These are all the things I'm working on this month, this week and today...and some of my things are private 😘
I will share I'm making progress in: spending less, eating less sugar, exercising more consistently, spending more time with my family and Jesus.♥️

Progress is good...it's moving forward in (hopefully) the right direction.
How about you...what does progress look like in your life today?

Today's prompt: New You...hence my "I'm at the hair salon" photo.😄 New You, New do 💇‍♀️
We have a motto in our house right now, and I'm sure you've either heard or said it yourself: New Year, New You.😉
We are saying it in our house for various and interesting reasons...from Emory wiping his own behind (he's 4), to Reynolds tying his shoes (hello, bunny ears) and Eliza Jane brushing her hair and pulling it out of her face (for crying out loud). And @theandrewrlucas wanting to run a ridiculous 650 miles this year...babe, you do you😘😜.
I can't say that I'm wanting a "new" version of myself this year. Or even that I'm wanting to start anything new, but I definitely want a better version of what I see, think, feel and hear. For me, I recognize it all starts with my time in the Word so this year's got a goal of rising early EVERY day to tune my heart and mind more into Him.♥️ Even on the days I want to sleep in, #firstthingsfirst.
How about you? New you or a better version?
