An Almost Hijacking By Reynolds

June 21, 2014 by Michelle Filed Under: Being a Mom, Life Leave a Comment

This kid.  I’m tell you, he knows when something is about to go down.

Yesterday, Andrew and I were both at work.  I was in a five hour long management meeting (sounds awful, right?!) and there is this rule about not being able to look at your cell phone.  I was communicating with my Supervisor to get some numbers from him so that I had them for what I was going to be talking about during the meeting.  While I was waiting for his response my beloved calls.  I ignored his call and shot a quick text, “mgt mtg”.

This is what I get back:

“Hijacked!”

“R has a fever and won’t stay awake….”

“I’m going to get him and call doc”

That’s enough to send a mom into a frenzy.  Even more so when she’s planned for a get-together at her home that evening and come hell or high water, it was going to happen!!

I said a prayer and hoped that our son was ok but my mind was racing…”won’t stay awake”.  This kid is 90 to nothin’ all day long usually, this is WEIRD, something is not.right.

At a break in our meeting I rushed to call Andrew to find out what was going on.  Apparently mid-morning R had become pretty dazed and confused and was cranky so his teachers put him in his crib, at which point he basically passed out asleep.  They knew this wasn’t normal for our child.

Andrew was on the way to the doc and said that R was pretty out of it, his eyes were really droopy.  What on earth!?  He was completely normal this morning.  I racked my brain to remember if he’d somehow gotten into anything that could have affected him and could come up with nothing.   “Let me know what the doctor says” was my only reply.

Not long after, I received another text, “Double ear infection”.  Bless.  This poor child has had more ear infections this year…and I know he’s just got to be miserable.  He’s got tubes, they were put in in April, and thankfully this is the first ear infection since then, but double?  I felt for him.

BUT, The party will go on!  YAY!!  Thinking that he’s not contagious, just really cranky (which he was for the first part of the party), we’ll get to keep this event on the calendar and not have to cancel like the events before.{Remember these: Hijacked,  Hijacked – Day 2 and the Hijacked Happy Hour}

A friend asked last night, “are you going to blog about tonight?”  At which point I had to think for a moment and then I said, “probably not…it’s been pretty low key.  I mean, no one is doing keg stands!! HA!”  Not that we had a keg on which you could “stand” but you get the picture.  It was low key.  Friends enjoying the company of friends.  Some friends were catching up and new friendships were being made.  It was great and I was blessed.

By the end of the night R had taken a “cat-nap” and was somehow re-energized to mingle with his guests!  He was running around with the Swiffer {my son, the janitor…}, talking, laughing and just being a ham.  Good ol’ Reynolds…he was back!

It’s the official First Day of Summer today.  Get out and catch some lightning bugs tonight or just have some friends over and enjoy some summer fare!

A Hijacked Happy Hour – by Reynolds

June 5, 2014 by Michelle Filed Under: Being a Mom Leave a Comment

So here we are. About 3 hours after “it” happened.
I was at home, working, when Andrew called to say he was on his way to pick up R from Daycare.  “Great! You’ll be home a little early!” I said before the rest of it came….”….to take him to the Emergency Room..”
“WHAT?! WHY?!”
“…called and said that he fell and has a gash in his head and needs a stitch or two…”
“OHMYGOSH!….”

Sigh.  Say a prayer.  Email some people to let them know I’m gone for the day, my son has to go to the ER…and then something about the fact that he is is father’s son 🙂 and that somehow this is comical.  Remember, it was a week ago that the hijacking started…man, I love that kid.  Never a dull moment…just like his daddy!

This was the blog post I’d been working on and was going to post later tonight but it was hijacked…
“Happy Hour”
I work with a really great group of folks.  Fun people who enjoy laughter and relaxing with each other.  A few months ago, some of us got together for Happy Hour and decided that we’d try to make this a semi-frequent occurrence.  Taking place at our homes rather than going out.  It’s not as expensive, people bring things to eat and its definitely more relaxed.
Today we hosted.
It was going to be a small crowd coming…only about 8 people.  Which was fine.  It’s intimate.  Not too crazy.
In preparation, I had a small menu planned…

A great chicken salad recipe I found at Real Simple a few weeks ago.  I made it without the mayo since one friend coming is a no-dairy eater.  I found some great Pita Bite Crackers at Trader Joe’s to serve with the chicken salad.
Next, I chose some Edamame – I mean, it’s easy, yummy and nutritious!  Just throw that bag in the microwave and voila! it’s done!
Then, I put together some easy fruit kabobs with blueberries and raspberries.  They also served as a garnish for the White Sangria I made.
Also at Trader Joe’s, I picked up the Guacamole Hummus (it sounded amazing!) along with their Veggie & Flaxseed Tortilla Chips.
Last thing I purchased was a wedge of their Asiago Cheese with Rosemary & Olive Oil (yum).

I mentioned the White Sangria…I really, REALLY enjoy Sangria in the summer.

That’s where it ended.  It never happened.

I’m happy to say that when I got to the ER, this is how my sweet boy looked:

And besides the fact that he didn’t care for the nurses pulling and poking at him, he was in a really good mood.  He laughed and was being totally himself.  Another sigh and “thank you, Lord”.
Then we were taken to another room where the Doc came in to check out the wound.  I may have grimaced…to which Andrew said “I told you not to look.”  Gee, thanks honey.  He’s my son, I kind of have to.  Thankful that I don’t have a weak stomach.
Doc said glue should work just fine…the wound was just small enough not to have to do stitches and this should prevent a worse scar.  I told a friend, I don’t really care about the scar…maybe one day when he’s a hunk looking himself in the mirror he’ll be mad at me and I may kick myself (yeah, right), but I just want what’s best.
Glue it was and we’re happy so far with the result.  Now to keep the kid from running with a Xylophone….yep.  That’s how we got here.  He was enjoying play time at daycare, and got excited (?), and then decided to run across the room with the xylophone in hand…feet got tripped up {he’s not a pro yet at this walking/running thing} and BOOOM! down he went.

As one (male) friend posted on Facebook, chicks dig scars…

My Day Has Been Hijacked – Day 2

May 30, 2014 by Michelle Filed Under: Being a Mom Leave a Comment

I guess I spoke too soon in yesterday’s post when I said R was ok.
He got worse, to the point where at 5pm yesterday evening his temp was 104.  I called his Pediatrician and was told we could wait until today to bring him in, or go to Pediatrics After Hours.  I’ll take that option, thankyouverymuch.
We’re first time parents. 102 makes us nervous and the fact was, R’s temp wasn’t going down, it was going up.
Doc said he had “fake flu” – which is most of the symptoms of flu but not the flu.  Well, that’s not confusing…Now what?  With most viruses, there’s not much you can do.  So we started alternating Motrin and Tylenol to get the temp down and thankfully this morning when we woke him up, his temp was 100.4.  That’s better, I’ll take it.

Diversion real quick to the hijacking -> this weekend we were going to Amelia Island.  The plan was to leave at 7am this morning so R would sleep part of the trip in the car and that we could get there early enough to have 2 pretty full days there.
As you can imagine, when the 104 showed up on the thermometer two things came to mind: ugh, his temp isn’t going down, what is going on? and I guess this means our trip isn’t going to happen…
So we adapt again.

R went down for his nap around 10:30 this morning and only slept about 45 minutes before he woke up screaming.  That lasted about 45 minutes.  He was still pretty fussy and having been home most of yesterday I was growing stir crazy. So after checking his temp (down again! yay, small victories!) I said to the hubs, “I can’t stay in this house all day again today.  Can we just go to the Zoo?  It would be a distraction for him and who knows, he may just pass out in the stroller.”
Thankfully, we had 3 passes (even though we only needed 2) so off to the Zoo we went.
For the most part, R didn’t say much, he just watched and pointed.  I was just thankful that he seemed to be feeling well enough to do that.

The goats freaked R out completely.  One stuck his big ‘ol head over the fencing and the poor kid just lost it.  We may have chuckled a little…and then I petted Mr. Goat to show R that he wasn’t scary.

R clapped when he saw the flamingos…guess I’ll have to get some for the yard….

He was a little afraid of the Koala (I know, but he’s a kid…) so Daddy took this pic with
him 😀

And then a bunch of school girls walked into the room so he was all about waving to them (he’s a ladies’ man!!)

R…terrified once again, this time by the bronze Orangutan.  He had a death grip on my ponytail!

Getting him to at least stand on Mr. Orangutan was anther small victory!

My boys.

Reynolds passed out in the car on the way home and is presently napping.  My prayer is that he feels better when he wakes up and that we can find another something fun to do tomorrow!
Wishing you and yours a lovely and sick-free weekend!

My Day Has Been Hijacked

May 29, 2014 by Michelle Filed Under: Being a Mom Leave a Comment

I looked up “hijacked” in the dictionary and feel that my chosen verb has been used appropriately.
Hijacked: to engage in such stealing or seizing. {emphasis ->MINE}

Today was my day off.  I’ve only taken 6 days off this year as personal (mental…) days.  And somehow, everyone of those but ONE has been hijacked by this cutie:

It’s like he has ESP or something crazy like it and just knows when I’m planning to take a day off.  I’ve stopped telling him…so somehow, he knows and he just makes himself sick so he can hang out all.day. with me!
Yesterday when I picked up this sweet little fella from daycare, he had a temp of 102.9…and still had it this morning so I said to my hubby, “looks like R is going to hang out with me today”.  Smiley face, sigh.
I love our son.  He’s amazing.  We have a good time together.
I just needed today.  I had a list…it wasn’t written down, but I had one.
So, I adjust.  Andrew’s mom came over for a few hours (PTL for this amazing woman!) so I could go get my hair done and now, little man and I will just enjoy the afternoon doing all the things I’d planned 🙂
He’s an adapter and for that I’m thankful!

To my friends who might be concerned, R is ok.  Apparently there’s a “bad stomach bug going around” and it’s landed at our house.  If anyone would like to pick it up and take it away, come on over! hehe.
But seriously, the kid is good…we’re about to go to Wally World and hopefully we’ll leave whatever germs are there, THERE.
I hope you’re getting all the things done today that you wanted to do!

Reynolds’ First Birthday {A Little Past – Due}

May 25, 2014 by Michelle Filed Under: Being a Mom, Life Leave a Comment

For Reynolds’ 1st Birthday, about a month ago, I’d decided that I was either going to 1. be “task-focused” the entire time with a camera in my hand, making sure to get the perfect pictures or 2. hire someone to do that part for me so that I could enjoy the friends and family that came over to celebrate this joyous event.
I hired my good friend Jennifer English and her husband, Russell, to be the photogs for the day.  And bribed them with hot dogs and a bouncy house to bring their kids too.
Here are some of my faves…I’ll give commentary on a few of the pictures along the way.

I got several ideas from Pinterest…the cup cake flags (that I made from scrap-book paper and tooth picks) and the “ONE” smash cake pennant (again, made from scrap-book paper, skewers and grey/white twine).
I was so proud of my paper straw wreath…still am proud.  It is still hanging in this very spot 🙂

The 1st Birthday chalk-board sign.  I gave Aunt Dana some ideas of what I wanted it to look like, the things to be sure to list and let her go at it!

R’s 12 months of photos…it blew by in the wink of an eye…
Thankful that it wasn’t pouring during the party so the kids could have a great time in the bounce house!

Our sweet Lil-bug.  Is this not the perfect picture of her?!

The smash cake and cupcakes were made by my sweet friend Aimée…and boy, were they gooooooood.

Baby bump photo op!

Aunt Dana and Uncle DJ

Precious friends!

Mommy and Daddy get in the bounce house!!

My most favorite of them all….and I’ve saved the best for last!
Is this kid not too cute!?!  Belly button and all!

A Place for Eliza Jane’s Bows

May 19, 2014 by Michelle Filed Under: Being a Mom, Decorating/Remodeling Leave a Comment

As most of you know, we’re expecting a girl in early September.
In preparation of this sweet little girl arriving, I’ve been trying to find a few things that I can add to our nursery (no complete overhauls!) to make it more “girly”.  Pinterest has certainly been involved and I found a fabulous idea the other day.
This bow frame (to any men wondering…, the thing on the right that’s really colorful!):

I mean, how cute is this!
I showed it to Andrew and he was a bit overwhelmed at first, “Thatsalotta bows”, he said.
I just nodded my head.  “Burn {that’s his nick-name}, you’re about to enter a world you’ve never known.  Get ready.”
The more I thought about this bow frame the more I was convinced that I could create my own.  All I needed was a frame, some chicken wire and voila!
Hobby Lobby is where I found my frame (it was 50% off too, so SCORE!).  Only “problem” was that it wasn’t white and I knew I wanted it white.  Well, I just painted a patio set with spray paint (see this blog post for that story!) so surely that would work.  Just to be sure, I asked one of the nice ladies in the custom frame section and she said spray paint would work just fine.
Here’s my frame.  I wanted something elegant, not too busy, but not too plain.

Before painting, to be sure I didn’t damage the paint, I went ahead and secured the back hanger.  Also, I wanted the chicken wire to be white like the frame, so I went ahead and got it fastened to the back:
I did wear my little garden gloves because I wasn’t quite sure if this stuff was going to be vicious or not.  It was a bit confusing at first because some person somewhere decided to use a piece of wiring to wrap it around (and through!!) the roll of chicken wire.  So after a “grrr” moment, I had a piece rolled out and was plotting the next steps.
Product info: I used Hex Netting, Malla Hexagonal in 2 inch mesh.  (I feel so smart right now after having said all that).  Really the only reason I got 2 inch over 1 was that the 1 inch looked too small and I knew Andrew was praying she wouldn’t end up with that many bows.
I used my trusty staple gun (he’s been with me for about 14 years), going around the entire frame securing at the twist in the wire.
Once secured, I used a pair of wire cutters and cut just on the other side of the twist and then used some needle-nose pliers to bend the wire back over the staple.  Then I went around with my hammer, tap, tap, tapping everything to make it flat and even more secure.
The finished view of the back:

“Finished {but yet, not} view from the front:
I mean, it’s pretty darn cute like this (above), but…I think the white (below) just makes it look so sweet and not quite so formal!

This is her first (and only, so far) bow…the one I’d bought a few weeks before we found out “it” was going to be a girl…and also the bow I used to announce to the world (Facebook is the world, right?) that we were having a girl!
Can’t wait to get little Eliza Jane some more bows to fill up this project!

ps…this was the last of the weekend’s projects! 🙂

To Moms and Ladies All Around

May 11, 2014 by Michelle Filed Under: Being a Mom, Life 2 Comments

Today is a special day for females all over…it’s Mother’s Day.  But it’s not just a day for the women who have someone that call them “Mom”.  It’s for any woman who has poured into the life of a child, teenager, college student, young adult or other.
I was thinking of my own mom this morning…here’s a picture from my wedding day.

I love how this picture was captured (besides my hump-back train), with my mom standing in the near distance, but perfectly placed in the mirror’s reflection.

My mom has been an amazing Godly influence on my life…I can hear all of the things she used to remind me of as a child growing up.  Many of those things I will tell my own children.  Maybe not the “because I said so”….  But there is a lot she told me and taught me that will stick with me for many years.

There’s a saying, it takes a village to raise a child.  It takes family, friends and a lot of people who care about you as a parent and your child(ren).  I was pondering listing out all the women who have had influence on me, but when I started naming them out, and foolishly thought I could count them on all 10 fingers and toes, I needed an army’s worth of fingers and toes to be able to count them (and remember?) them all.
Undoubtedly, I would forget someone.  So, the list isn’t going to be posted.  But to my friends who may be the same age or many years the wiser, you who have guided and loved me over the last 34 years of life, I thank you.  Be encouraged that if you love, and in grace, tell others what they need to hear, someone is being changed; maybe not right this moment, but someone is being changed.
Wishing you a blessed Mother’s Day!

Happy Saturday people!!🙌🥳 Today is day 6 of Happy Saturday people!!🙌🥳
Today is day 6 of the @hopewriters #writingchallenge. I actually skipped yesterday because I felt very uninspired by all the things around me 🥴😩 and the prompt Fresh didnt conjure up anything exciting.
But. Today is a brand new day and we're off to a great start over here.🌞
Today's prompt is Rhythm...and being a lover of words, I looked it up to read all of the meanings. 📚
Rhythm always makes me think of music and dancing, so today's pic is of my feet.🤩 I'm no professional dancer but I LOVE to dance. We almost always have music playing in our house and twirling is a constant. Eliza Jane takes dance lessons and Reynolds is hoping to jump into a hip hop class at the same studio.🕺 Andrew and I took dance lessons for a little over a year, until the world shut down last year. So dancing is in our veins.
Along with dancing are repeated patterns and such is life. Patterns of waking and sleeping and the chores of the day. Patterns of food and seasons. Patterns of work and rest. Patterns of joy and sadness.
There are rhythms all around if we are conscious enough to see them.
What patterns do you see in your own world?
#hopewriterlife
Day 4 of the @hopewriters #writingchallenge and to Day 4 of the @hopewriters #writingchallenge and today's prompt is simply: Twenty One.
21. A simple enough number. I pondered writing to my 21 year-old self and quickly decided that wouldn't be a fun time to reminisce 🤪, so I scratched that idea.

I debated on sharing 21 ideas for supper but who am I to tackle THAT!? 👩‍🍳
Maybe 21 books that I want to read this year? 📚
What about 21 stores and shops where I like to find our home reno supplies? Nah.

I even considered 21 hopes for this brand new year we've just started but wasn't quite feeling it.

I landed on 21 adjectives to describe what I like about myself. Some of you may think, why on earth? Because it was hard 🥴😬. Because it forced me to really compliment myself when I am my own worst critic and often speak negativity over myself. It took me maybe 2 minutes to do this, and for that I am thankful!🙌

If you were to write 21 adjectives of what you like about yourself could you do it? And how long would it take you? What would you write?😉 Debating? Just do it 😘♥️

Shine: to give out a bright light or a quality of Shine: to give out a bright light or a quality of brightness.
Today is day 3 of the @hopewriters #writingchallenge and the topic is the word Shine.
When I think of shining, its in a way that brings happiness, joy, excitement, expectation even. Like the sun rising in the east - hence my photo from Sunday morning when Andrew and I were in Kiawah. The shining I think of doesn't bring dread or gloom. When the sun shines, especially after a rainy day, we are thrilled ♥️ and even relieved at times, that the gloom is over.

This is what I want of my life, my words and actions...I want to shine in a way, that people are excited to see/hear from me, as they are a bright star or the sun. Not dread my appearing 😩 (or God forbid applaud my leaving).

Lord, shine through me so that it's you they see. Not me, Lord. Not me.

#powersheetsplanner January tending list.😆 These are all the things I'm working on this month, this week and today...and some of my things are private 😘
I will share I'm making progress in: spending less, eating less sugar, exercising more consistently, spending more time with my family and Jesus.♥️

Progress is good...it's moving forward in (hopefully) the right direction.
How about you...what does progress look like in your life today?

😄 This week I'm participating in the @hopewrite 😄 This week I'm participating in the @hopewriters #writingchallenge.
Today's prompt: New You...hence my "I'm at the hair salon" photo.😄 New You, New do 💇‍♀️
We have a motto in our house right now, and I'm sure you've either heard or said it yourself: New Year, New You.😉
We are saying it in our house for various and interesting reasons...from Emory wiping his own behind (he's 4), to Reynolds tying his shoes (hello, bunny ears) and Eliza Jane brushing her hair and pulling it out of her face (for crying out loud). And @theandrewrlucas wanting to run a ridiculous 650 miles this year...babe, you do you😘😜.
I can't say that I'm wanting a "new" version of myself this year. Or even that I'm wanting to start anything new, but I definitely want a better version of what I see, think, feel and hear. For me, I recognize it all starts with my time in the Word so this year's got a goal of rising early EVERY day to tune my heart and mind more into Him.♥️ Even on the days I want to sleep in, #firstthingsfirst.
How about you? New you or a better version?
#hopewriterlife
