The Sunday Night {Impromptu} Dinner

July 28, 2015 by Michelle Filed Under: Cooking, Food & Drink, Life 6 Comments

This past Sunday night we threw together an impromptu dinner – inviting our across-the-street neighbors.  {We invited another couple that couldn’t swing it at such last minute!}  Andrew threw some chicken and steaks on the grill along with an onion and some corn on the cob.  I mixed up a quick broccoli grape pasta salad {see below for that recipe link!}.  And our sweet neighbors brought over what they had prepared for dinner – a couscous salad {with grape tomatoes, olives and cucumber slices} and some Korean steak!  {We had plenty of meat!}

It got me thinking about Sunday night dinners.  And why we should all host one….like, every Sunday.

Here are some ponderings I had – in no particular order:

  • Sundays are the BEST day
    • It’s called Sunday FUNday for a reason right?!
    • Think about it:
      • Friday night, people are exhausted {at least WE are!}
      • Saturday night is usually reserved for other parties, weddings, etc.
    • Sunday is just the perfect day…and it gives a lovely closing to your wild and crazy weekend…AND starts your week off perfectly, getting to know your friends and neighbors
  • FOOOOOOOD
    • In thinking about our next one…we’re thinking that the host provides the meat and the guests bring a side
    • You get to introduce yourself and your friends to new foods/recipes/flavors/etc.
    • Delicious, yummy, amazing food
    • Lots of leftovers!!!
  • Kids
    • If there are kids…they can get the last of their weekend energy out and they will PASS.OUT. at bedtime {YES!!!}
    • They get to form relationships with adults AND other kiddos
    • Social and sharing (?!?!) skills are developed/strengthened!!!!!
    • They provide hilarious entertainment {at least ours and the ones across the street do!!}
  • YOU get to build and strengthen relationships with friends and neighbors!!
    • Talking about what’s going on in each other’s lives: family, activities, work, social
    • How you can support each other in the coming week. eg: Eliza Jane is getting tubes Thursday {whoop!!} and when I told our neighbors this, the wife offered to keep her for us so we wouldn’t have to take off from work.  A SUPER sweet gesture, but I will be home with her 🙂
    • Lots of laughter – at each other, at our kids, at life in general.  Lots of laughter.
  • It’s just a good time.
    • I can’t stress this one enough.  It just is!!
    • Life is busy.  B-U-S-Y.  Sunday night dinner is a couple of hours of sitting back, enjoying really good food and really great people.

Our table at the end of supper time showed that there was plenty of good eats…and leftovers!  For those that requested the → broccoli and grape pasta salad ← just click right there!  And let me just tell you…it is delicious!
