Kitchen Sink Styles
Prior to my own design journey I thought there were two basic styles of sinks and that was it: the one my grandma had and a farmhouse sink. The one my grandma had was like the one my mom, aunt, friends’ moms, neighbors and everyone else had in their kitchens…the standard double bowl stainless option. Never did I really dream of all the colors, sizes and specifics that are actually available for kitchen sinks!
All the Options
As the design world has grown and evolved over time, many more sink shapes and options have come available. I’ll share a few in the photos below, but first a few things:
- Most sink varieties can be mounted under the counter – an undermount as we would call it, and trust me, this is the one you want
- Nearly all brands are available in stainless, quartz or fireclay
- All styles are available as double bowl or single bowl
- A double bowl sink can be 50/50, 60/40 or some other configuration
Farmhouse Syle: Things You Don’t Know
When you’re designing or redesigning your kitchen and considering a farmhouse style sink, your sink cabinet, or base that holds the sink is specific. That pretty front of the sink that you want to see takes up valuable real estate in a cabinet base. If you are installing a farmhouse where a regular undermount or overmount sink was originally, the cabinet would need to be retrofitted for the new sink. If you’re ordering new cabinets, the cabinet maker needs to know up front about the farmhouse sink choice because again, that sink base is different from a ‘standard’ sink.
You can see in the photo above how low the cabinet doors are under the farmhouse sink compared to the photo below of a standard undermount.
My Style
I have used the farmhouse sink in a couple of projects, but because it is more style-specific and is more costly, I lean towards the double bowl stainless undermount for the majority of our projects.
For more sink ideas and inspiration check out my Pinterest board for kitchen sinks! As with everyting else I share design-wise, there’s no right or wrong option. The type of sink you choose should be one that fits your style and the function you want in your kitchen more than anything. Feel free to ask any questions! One last tip, always have your plumber install a garbage disposal when he’s installing the faucet! 😉
