Old Glory: The Stars And Stripes
This morning Reynolds and I took a quick trip down to the outlets in North Charleston and on our way out of Columbia I saw a massive American flag flying boldly over the interstate. It was absolutely beautiful. I love to see a grand, enormous American flag flying over the interstate. I started to take a picture but then, I was driving and my eye didn’t catch it soon enough for me to grab my phone, put in the password and find the camera….so I took a mental photo instead. Just trust me, it was glorious!
Then I looked over and right next to me, on the console in my car, was thisReynolds’ class made these fantastic shirts at school this week – his little hand print is the blue canton. I would frame this if it wasn’t a shirt…and add it to our little art gallery going up the stair case! I picked up his shirt this morning as I dropped off Eliza Jane. There they were, all the t-shirts made by the kids in his class laying out on a large table and they were so cute and so pretty all at the same time. So much right there…made by these sweet little hands. All of it made me think…who recites the Pledge of Allegiance anymore? Do kids these days even know it {save the parents that have taught them}? I feel like times are so different now than from when I was a kid…and I feel old for making that statement…but it’s true.
Just wondering what our flag means to you and for those with kids or grandkids, are you teaching them about the history of our great nation and the Pledge of Allegiance?
For those who need a refresher of the Pledge:
“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”
Fun facts can be found on Wikipedia about the Pledge.
And from last night’s post about USA trivia, the colors of the flag have the following meanings:
- White signifies purity and innocence
- Red: hardiness and valour
- Blue: vigilance, perseverance and justice
Those are some pretty impressive nouns right there…and they could probably be a blog post all on their own. I’ll just let you all ponder them this July 4th. 🙂
I hope you all have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend! Happy July 4th!
