Andrew and I are not “readers”. Which is why we’re probably such a great match for each other. I easily get bored with people who sit around and read. 😉 {I probably should have labeled this as a confession…}
I’ve never been one to get excited about reading a book. I read the books I had to read in high school and college but unless I have to read or someone does some REALLY good convincing, I have other things going on in my life than to sit down and read a book for hours on end. I just don’t have time. Nor do I really want to sit still.
Maybe that’s the problem, you have to sit still to read. Well, that’s not entirely true. I’ve read a few short stories while walking on the treadmill at night, but you get the picture. Sitting still is not something Andrew and I are good at doing.
Tonight, Andrew says to me, “I want to read.” My first words were of a smart-aleck nature along with a snort/laugh.
Then he says, “I mean smart people read.”
{OMG, he’s opening the door wide open for me to say something so sassy!!}. Instead, “ha! babe, you ARE smart! And you don’t have to READ to be smart…it probably helps…buuut… What do you want to read?”
“Nothing boring.”
Then we had this conversation about how neither of us really likes to read. But that we have time because we don’t really watch TV – only shows on HGTV, the History channel (boring to me) and a few other randoms. We aren’t caught up in a lot of the trendy, hit TV shows out there so technically we do have time to read.
He says, “You know that time between 8-9 every night where we’re not doing anything…we should read.”
Um, I might be out for a walk during that time, I might be doing laundry, cleaning up the kitchen, hiding……
I do try to read something most nights but it’s not going to be novel.
I said, “I read Parenting, HGTV, BHG and Real Simple magazines.” Not to mention my Bible and other things.
Short stories and articles. We’re good for about 5-10 minutes of reading and then that’s it. We have short attention spans. {Some friends will find that completely shocking!}
After I put R down for bed I came down the stairs to find Andrew reading the paper. Reminiscent of my dad (who took the black off a news paper), I asked what he was reading (clearly the paper, but what in particular). We chatted and then the next thing I knew he was flipping TV channels, landing on “Duck Dynasty”. After a few minutes I lovingly said, “This is why you don’t read…you start watching crap like this and get distracted.” We both laughed. “So true.”
I guess we’ll just accept the fact that we aren’t “readers” and enjoy the things that we do read, whether it’s a short story, a blog, an article on saving or a verse to encourage us and others.
I hope you enjoyed reading this blog about reading…or the lack of it.
