Interior Design: A Dream
As a kid I really wanted to be a designer when I grew up. I remember going to a party for a girl-friend, Lindsay Misch, where the theme was to dress up in what you wanted to be as a grown-up. I took some of my uncle’s color-pencil drawings because he was an amazing artist and for the night, I pretended to be a designer. I REALLY wanted to be a fashion designer. {I know some of you who know me are busting the buttons off your pants because you’re laughing so darn hard!}
I cannot draw.
I can barely choose colors that go together or compliment each other. Which means my wardrobe is pretty blah. So a fashion designer?!! Far stretch.
Plus, I just learned how to curl my hair like a Kardashian last year. Seriously.
I am not designer material.
I left those dreams in the dust a LONG time ago.
So forget the fashion designer gig. I could do some interior design.
I used to draw vases of flowers. Draw…it was more like will myself to create something that had the slightest resemblance of a vase, with flowers, on the top of a piano. I created these wonky images while I waited for my turn at piano lessons…and other places where I was incredibly bored and wished desperately to be anywhere but there. {But thanks, Mom, for the lessons!!}
In a statistics class in high school I designed rooms of a home + furniture with graph paper…so I’m actually pretty good at figuring out how to arrange {or re-arrange!} a room.
I got the newest Restoration Hardware catalog last week. I went to bed early one night just so I could sit and stare at the 500+(!!!!) beautiful pages of impeccable furniture and rooms.
Dreaming of all the things I could purchase, and what would go where…and how I could add that pillow from Anthropologie to add a splash of color!!!
Who am I kidding. I don’t even have a clue. I have no idea of where to begin to create a cohesive space. I am fascinated by those that can. I felt dejected that night. I want so badly to be able to do this well, but I do not have that skill set.
So. What to do?
Add more pins to Pinterest and try to replicate as best I can the things I see?!
AND….camp out on the Hunted Interior’s website….a sweet gal from GA, her taste is so close to mine {though my home looks NOTHING like hers!!}. She uses bright colors mixed in with the classics, which is right up my alley.
I guess I could hire someone, but then that’s an entirely different area that I know nothing about – how do I find someone and how do I know that the person will choose things that I will love {without having to meet a gazillion times!}? My dearest friend hired someone last year and I remember her sending me pictures of lamps asking me which one I liked best. I honestly didn’t know what to tell her…but gave her my opinion anyway. I think she ended up going with the designer’s choice…
I’m curious about y’all – Where do you start when decorating a space? Where do you get your decorating inspiration? Do you hire out for help or create spaces on your own?
I love to search magazines and websites and put things together! I have doggie-eared magazines just waiting for me to have a space and budget to put it all together! 😉
